Dr. Soshitsu Sen XV, the 15th Grand Master of the Urasenke School of Tea,
established the Washington DC Branch, under the auspices of the New York Chanoyu
Center, so that anyone living in the greater Washington DC area may be able to
experience Chanoyu, the Japanese Way of Tea. The Branch was founded in 1994 in
Rockville, Maryland, and moved to its current location in 1998.
The Urasenke Washington DC Branch is one of the 20 Foreign Branch Offices of the
Urasenke Foundation in Kyoto, Japan, and the teaching center for the Washington
DC area. Its staff has been trained at the Urasenke Headquarters in Kyoto, Japan
and assigned to the Branch. The Branch has an authentic 8 tatami mat tearoom.
The Branch offers:
• Chanoyu Lessons
• Lecture/Demonstrations
• Seasonal Tea Gatherings & Events
• Workshop/Lectures
Chanoyu Lessons
Lessons focus on the various tea preparation procedures. Students study both tea
preparation, and how to be a guest, which is a very important part of studying
Tea. Lessons help the student develop skills in concentration, movement, and
aesthetic appreciation.
Lessons are offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Tuition is
due monthly regardless of attendance. Please contact the Branch by telephone for
details.
Please note that all students are advised to be registered members of the
Urasenke Tankokai Washington DC Association, a locally formed membership
organization.
Lecture/Demonstrations
Lecture/Demonstrations are an excellent way for groups to experience Chanoyu.
Lecture/Demonstrations include a talk on Chanoyu and demonstration of how a cup
of Tea is prepared and how a guest appreciates it.
Please contact the Urasenke Branch by telephone for further information.
Seasonal Tea Gatherings
Students who study at the Urasenke Branch will be invited to Seasonal Tea
Gatherings or Events.
Workshop/Lectures
Tea related workshop/lectures may be offered to students who study Chanoyu at
the Urasenke Branch.
Programs in cooperation with the Urasenke Tankokai Washington DC Association
In addition to the above programs offered by the Urasenke Washington DC Branch,
the Urasenke Tankokai Washington DC Association, a locally formed membership
organization, offers a schedule of programs, which includes tea gatherings,
tea-related workshops, and trips to area museums, and points of interest. These
events are generally held in various locations in the Greater Washington area.
